My Pal Foot Foot was an active part of an underground pop scene that flourished in Tokyo during the early aughts. Kei Takeshita, one half of My Pal Foot Foot, moved to Kyoto to complete his first full album for Moon Face Boys, which was brought to fruition through his introduction to new friends in a new city. Takeshita’s softly-spoken vocals are accompanied by a modest ensemble of keys and drums, and the music captures the intimacy and familiarity of the everyday that are so often lost in big budget productions. It only makes sense then that the group borrowed the unusual surname Kumisu from a tenant newsletter—another testament to how much Takeshita values the importance of finding strange but beautiful pleasures in the ordinary lives we lead. Kumisu is an indie pop album that strives for authenticity as an attempt to shape one’s everyday life as a work of art.
