With an unusual instrumentation featuring two string players (Makoto Inada and Seijiro Kuroda) and a singer-songwriter (Shota Terai), Gofish creates folk-inspired songs with warm and breathy vocals. Although long vocalizations can be quickly rendered excessive or disingenuously decorative, vocalist Shota Terai shows a unique ability to present himself without sacrificing his earnestness and intensity in Totemo Iikoto (“a very good thing”). Unlike any conventional “with strings” arrangements, pastoral prog rock, or even Joni Mitchell’s “Hissing of Summer Lawns,” Gofish manages to explore uncharted territories in the realm of singer-songwriter albums.
