NRQ (New Residential Quarters) is an instrumental quartet comprising of Yuki Yoshida on erhu, Takuma Makino on guitar, Masanori Hattori on double bass, and Kanji Nakao on drums and sax. As an album that marks their 15th year anniversary, Common treads through a diverse field of musical roots and aesthetics that showcases the group’s superb musicianship and versatility. Starting with a solemn arco double bass solo, the album wavers between contemplative and spirited movements, urban and pastoral imagery, and rhapsodic and melancholic melodies. From the country twang in “Rain” to the hard rock inspired shreds in “Seibu Train,” Common presents a wealth of stylistic and emotional features that are immensely varying yet never disparate – an elegant collection of songs to always amaze and delight.
