Buoy is the nom de scène for Yoneyama Misa’s musical projects. Like her alias that is a homophone of “buoy” that literally means “floating” in Japanese, the tracks in Umbralucent are also full of playful wordplays and metaphors. With songs that extend from her day to day lived experiences, Buoy weaves through numerous layers of meaning through her lyrics, entwining the listeners in a sonic fabric that strangely feels familiar and foreign, close and distant, and nostalgic and new at the same time. From soft arpeggiations to thick orchestrations and whispery vocals to dense choruses, the strands of seeming contradictions in Umbralucent finds a way to beautifully coalesce in this breathtaking twelve-track album.
