TRACKS
In March 2011, Jad Fair, the godfather of lo-fi rock, went on a Japanese tour with Tenniscoats. After the tour, they spent two days to record Enjoy Your Life in Tokyo. Saya & Takashi Ueno of Tenniscoats contributed songs to the lyrics prepared by Jad, which were further embellished by Jad’s customized guitar with its neck and body secured by rubber bands that provided extreme portamento effects. Despite only recording for several hours, they ended up with 16 astonishing tracks. The only time the recording was delayed was when Jad prepared to sing the song “Tonarigumi” (neighborhood association) in Japanese and Saya couldn’t stop herself from laughing, insisting that Jad’s Japanese was too cute (the conversation was recorded and included in the album). As Jad sat on the couch with a big guitar and waited quietly for instructions, the members of Tenniscoats were sometimes overexcited and boisterous—but somewhere between these contrasting dynamics, they were able to find a calming mood reminiscent of Tenniscoats’ Toki no Uta with Jad’s sometimes timid (but endearing) recitations. Without hesitation, Enjoy Your Life must be the most adorable music in the world.
