Ippei Matsui's solo exhibition, Don’t Light Up the Dark, was held at Gallery iTohen, Osaka in February 2015. A 39-minute track was recorded by Ippei Matsui (electric guitar), Ztom Motoyama (pedal steel), and YTAMO (piano, electronics) to accompany the exhibition.
Don’t Light Up the Dark was inspired by the idea of cave-dwelling bat colonies. As a trespasser of an imaginary cave, Matsui recreated a sonic and visual representation of the anxiety and conflict of bringing light that inadvertently disturbs the cave’s serene darkness. The movement of light is introduced into what was motionless only moments ago. Curiously, works of painting that bear the same title in the exhibition are composed of vivid colors. The sounds and paintings of Don’t Light Up the Dark attempt to capture the beauty of an irreversible moment of something being lost – exposing light into the magnificence of darkness that once enveloped its own world of undisturbed life.
