As a guitarist who fostered and supported numerous Tokyo-based bands during the late aughts and early teens, Satoshi Fujiwara has been part of a burgeoning breed of young musicians with a knack for intimate home recordings with chamber-pop sensibilities, sans the ostentatious grandeur. I, Noru is his debut album as a singer-songwriter, and the collection of songs is an exploration of his collaborative efforts with a small chamber ensemble comprising of shibacoji (cello), kyooo (violin), Zentaro Miyamoto (drums), and Yukiko Inoue (piano). With soft, drawn-out vocals that almost approach liturgical qualities, the album title aptly splits the word “to pray” into i for prayer and -noru, an invented phonetic morpheme with ambiguous homonymic meanings that could be interpreted as “to ride,” “to be recorded,” or “to be placed upon.”
